Hi there, Im fairly new to more advanced cameras and what not. Im not tech savy at all and Im curious about this camera. I love making amature movies and Im taking film classes soon. So, can anyone just literally tell me all I would know about this and hooking it up to my computer after I record? I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, Im buying more memory for the computer for the camera. Since I need a better editing program. So, after after I record something on this camera, can I just put the miniDVD in my computer and somehow save it? Or do I need special cables, etc. Because I keep reading about "Firewire" and its confusing me, haha. Im also looking into buying a better light to hook up to the camera since I love night shots. How is the zoom in the dark with this camera and does it have night vision? And of course, haha, does it even HAVE a hook up for an extra light? I know the audio isnt going to be the best on just the camera, so Im planning to buy a mini mic to hook up to the mic port on the camera. And um, I think thats it. The Canon ZR960 is a standard definition, entry-level, miniDV tape based camcorder that can record to standard definition DV format in either 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio. To get video from the digital video tape to the computer, you will connect a firewire cable (not USB) to the camcorder's DV port (not USB) and the computer's firewire port (not USB). Fiwire, IEEE1394, DV and i.LINK are all the same thing. They are not USB. USB won't work. USB-to-firewire cable/converter/adapter/hub things won't work. According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dell_Inspiron_1525 your computer does not have a 1394/firewire port. However, your computer has an ExpressCard slot, so you can add a firewire port. The Canon ZR960 does not use DVDs for recording media. No one should ever get a consumer grade, DVD based, standard definition camcorder. The video is too compressed to provide decent video quality for editing. The "DV" in miniDV tape is "Digital Video". The zeros and ones recorded to miniDV tape are just as digital as those recorded to hard disc drive, flash memory or even DVD media. The difference is that the DV video file format is the least compressed. This is one - of MANY - reasons why the professionals contimnue using DV (and HDV) format video. More compression = more discarded video data = reduced video quality. A video light will help - if the subject is within about 10 feet of the light (or if the light is REALLY bright, then further is OK - but not much further). The small lenses and imaging chips in consumer camcorders do not handle low-light capture very well - the video will be grainy. As the lenses and imaging chips get bigger and the low light behavior gets better, the camcorders get more expensive. If you zoom into the darkeness - or low light - the auto focus system will not know what to focus on (not enough light). The Canon ZR960 does not have a built-in infrared emitter for zero light capture like some Sony consumer cams have. The "auto" setting in the ZR960, under low light conditions, will slow the shutter and increase the iris size. The slow shutter will cause "ghosting" during fast motion. The ZR960 is one of the least expensive camcorders with a mic jack - as with all consumer camcorders with a mic jack (there are very few - most are in the Canon line up) it is a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo mic jack. A stereo mic is a good idea - otherwise, the mono mic audio will be recorded only to the right channel. You can fix this in post, but it is an extra step. The Audio Technica Pro24CM or NRG Research SA-800 are suggested - unless you are somehow compelled to buy the Canon external mic. The ZR960 does not have manual audio control. As far as I know, the least expensive camcorder with manual audio control and a mic jack is the Canon HV40. When the camcorder's DV port is connected to the computer's firewire port with the firewire cable and the camcorder is in "Play" mode, launch the video editor and "Capture" or import the video.
