you can invest in learning software but buying the actual software wouldn't be much of an investment. most computer programs are renewed once a year. sometimes the upgrade isn't worth it but sometimes the new features are absolutely irresistible the most important piece of software to learn is photoshop. photoshop is practically part of everyones workflow at some point and an absolute must learn tool for the majority of pro photographers. some other software worth learning are: bridge/camera raw (comes with photoshop), Adobe lightroom, Apple aperture (mac only): these programs are organizational and Raw conversion tools. that is pretty much it on the software side as stated above photoshop is the most important program for most since it does a lot of your heavy lifting. once you are proficient in photoshop the other programs end up being a lot easier to learn.
